Use project messages
Read project conversations, send messages and files, mention participants and follow unread updates.
Each conversation belongs to one active project. It stays with the project details, material and team.
Open the inbox
- Click Messages in the header.
- Select a project conversation from the list. The newest conversation opens first.
- On a phone, open the project selector above the conversation to switch projects.
The list shows the latest sender, message or attachment, its age and the unread count. If there are no conversations yet, click Browse projects and open a project.
On a project page, you can also click the speech-bubble icon beside the message count to open its conversation.
Understand who has access
The project creator, Project Manager, assigned Team members, and organization owners and administrators can read and send messages for an active project. Other organization members cannot open that project's conversation.
The mention picker shows only people who can access the chat in the active organization. Archived projects have no active chat.
Send a message
- Open the project conversation.
- Type into Type a message.... A message can contain up to 2,000 characters.
- Click Send message. You can also press Enter. Use Shift+Enter for a new line.
You can send files without message text.
Attach files
- Click Attach file.
- Choose up to five files.
- Wait until every file finishes uploading.
- Click Send message.
Each file can be up to 10 MB. Supported files are images except SVG, PDF, Word documents, Excel workbooks, CSV, plain text and ZIP files. Remove an attachment before sending if you chose the wrong file.
Why can I not send yet?
Wait for all attachments to finish uploading. A rejected file may be empty, larger than 10 MB or an unsupported type. A message also needs text or at least one attachment.
Mention a participant
- Type
@in Type a message.... - Continue typing a name or email address.
- Choose the person from the suggestions.
- Send the message.
The selected name is stored in the message and shown with emphasis. If two people have the same name, the email address is included so readers can tell them apart.
A mention does not assign the message to that person and does not send an extra notification. Everyone with access reads the same project conversation.
Read new messages
Opening a conversation marks the existing messages as read. Your own messages never count as unread for you. Unread counts appear in the header, dashboard, project cards and inbox.
An open conversation checks for new messages every 10 seconds while the browser tab is visible. New messages appear automatically and the conversation scrolls to the latest message. Unread badges elsewhere are loaded with their page. Navigate or refresh the page if a badge has not updated yet.
Why does an unread badge remain after I opened the conversation?
The conversation is marked as read when it opens. The surrounding inbox or header may still show the count from its earlier page load. Navigate to another page or refresh to load the current count.
Filter a conversation by sender
Click a sender's name or avatar to show only that person's messages. Click Clear sender filter to return to the complete conversation.
